Private Vs Group Swimming Lessons

Private vs. Group Swimming Lessons: Avoiding the “Time Tax”

Swimming is one of the top 5 most loved sports in England, but for many parents in South West London, it has become a weekly source of frustration. When children spend months—or even years—stuck in the same level without progress, the “cheap” lesson becomes the most expensive mistake you can make. We call this the Time Tax.

The Plateau: Why is my child not progressing in swimming?

This is the #1 question I hear from parents joining Blue Wave from other schools. If your child has hit a plateau, it is rarely their fault. Usually, it is a failure of the environment. Lack of progress is almost always caused by:

  • Too many children in a lane: In a group of 10, your child is likely only “swimming” for 10% of the lesson.
  • Generic teaching: Standardized groups don’t account for individual fears or physical “sticking points.”
  • The “Supervised Splashing” Trap: If the teacher is just keeping the group safe rather than correcting technique, progress stops.

To break the plateau, you must change the ratio. Below, we compare the two professional solutions to stalled progress.

The decision between private (1:1) and small group swimming lessons (1:3) is about more than cost; it’s about technical pedagogy and reclaiming your Saturdays.

The Benefit of Private (1:1) Swim Lessons

For timid children or those who have “plateaued” for six months or more, private lessons are the fastest way to break through. A tailored lesson means the teacher modifies every drill to suit the child’s specific biomechanics and psychological state.

Private lessons are highly effective during the beginning stages to build “Water Competency” quickly, especially before a summer holiday or school gala.

The Boutique Solution: Small Group Lessons (1:3 Ratio)

At Blue Wave Swim School, we refuse to teach large groups. We cap our Small Group Lessons at a maximum of 3 children. This is the “Goldilocks” zone of swimming instruction.

  • Social Motivation: Children learn through imitation. Watching a peer master a skill provides a powerful psychological boost that 1:1 lessons sometimes lack.
  • Cost-Efficiency: You receive near-private levels of attention (33% of the teacher’s time) at a much lower price point than 1:1.
  • Constant Engagement: With only 3 children, there is no “standing on the side.” The lesson remains active, technical, and high-energy.

Which Option Is Right for You?

“If your child has spent three terms in a leisure centre group and still cannot swim 5 meters without a float, you aren’t saving money—you are paying a ‘Time Tax’ on your Saturdays.” – Marjan Moosavi

Choose Private (1:1) if:

  • Your child has had a traumatic experience or is genuinely water-phobic.
  • You have a specific, urgent goal (e.g., swimming safely before a July holiday).
  • Your child is easily distracted and needs specialized discipline and 100% focus.

Choose Small Group (1:3) if:

  • Your child is confident but needs technical refinement to move to the next level.
  • You want the most cost-effective way to achieve long-term technical progress.
  • You want to avoid the “headache” of standard groups while keeping the social element of sports.
