To find or become a top-tier instructor, you must first understand the journey of professional qualification and the specific traits that separate a basic instructor from a truly great one. A successful swimming teacher does more than just supervise; they model correct form, inspire confidence, and provide the technical expertise necessary for lifelong water safety.
Sound easy? Actually, this is not an easy task, especially if you really want to be good at it. Generally, a good teacher or coach has to dedicate plenty of time and energy, and it takes years of practice to get good at teaching: teaching swimming is no exception.
Having a swimming teaching qualification means a teacher has demonstrated his/her competency for teaching swimming by undertaking tests and exams.
In England, there are two major awarding bodies from which teachers can receive their swimming teaching qualifications.
These are Swim England (former ASA) and the STA. However, around the world, there are many other awarding bodies which provide excellent swimming teacher training programmes and their qualifications are internationally recognised.
Having a swimming teaching qualification is the absolute bare minimum that one has to have in order to be able to teach swimming.
A good teacher is not just qualified, he/she is also knowledgeable. In fact, a truly excellent teacher is trained and knowledgeable in lots of different things – ranging from swimming and diving to water polo and Parent & Toddler Swimming.
They also have the skills to teach diverse groups. A good swimming teacher is part of a swimming teaching community and is always seeking to gain more knowledge and experience and to exchange ideas with other teachers.
Every child is different and the pace of learning swimming is highly dependent on the child’s age, personality and how much water exposure they have had before starting formal lessons. A good teacher will know all of this.
A good teacher keeps regular records of his/her classes and has a plan for what needs to be achieved over a session, as well as during a term or season. They know how to set goals for different classes based on different abilities and ages, and they know what exercises and drills they need to implement to achieve their goals.
Teaching swimming has to be more than just verbally giving out instructions to learners and managing a crowd. It’s about motivating children and caring about the feedback that children provide during lessons. For example, if an exercise is not working (it is too hard or too easy), a good teacher should be able to use his/her imagination and creativity to implement changes. Every activity in the lesson should be fun, purposeful and should be used to help the children work towards achieving a goal.
In summary, developing the technical skills and confidence required for lifelong swimming depends entirely on the quality of the instructor. A great teacher must be knowledgeable, motivating, and capable of inspiring trust to get the very best out of every swimmer. A good swim school with professional staff
Although I have only attended two lessons, Marjan’s bubbly personality makes you feel instantly at ease. During the lessons, the pool was not very busy which is a good thing (as opposed to public pools) for those who are anxious.
I would strongly recommend to adults who have experienced trauma with water at a certain time in their lives.

Excellent results
My son is 4 years-old and we were looking for weekend swimming classes in a nice environment that could bring good results. After some research we chose Blue Wave Swim. Our son has been having private lessons since the end of 2018 and he is progressing very well. Superb Swimming School in Wimbledon
My daughter, who is now 7 years old, started with blue wave two years back and we have been very happy with her progress at the school. Initially we started with group lessons but once she got comfortable in water we moved her to semi private lessons, which made a lot of difference in her ability to learn swimming. As part of the smaller group she is better bonded with other children in the group and gets more attention from the swimming instructor, which is helping her advance her swimming skills. During her 2 years with blue wave, swimming instructors for my daughter have changed and while continuity in learning was maintained, I think this could have been managed better. Needless to say, she still goes and enjoys her time here and looks forward to her class every week. Overall we are very pleased with Blue Wave and would recommend them without any hesitation.

Excellent Wimbledon Swimming School
Our children, now ages 9 and 7, have been taking lessons with Blue Wave since early 2017. They have made great progress with their swimming skills. We have been very impressed with the teaching and personalised attention both children have received. Best of all they enjoy and look forward to their lessons. The location is also convenient for Wimbledon residents.
