Book Swimming Lessons Instead of Buying Armbands

Holiday Season And Have Children Swimming Without Armbands

Last Update: March 2026

Holidays are normally planned earlier in the year, as soon as the new year holiday is finished, most families in the U.K start thinking and planning their holidays somewhere close to water. Popular summer holiday destinations often are locations close to a river, a lake, sea, or have several swimming pools. Mind you, visiting waterparks is also a very popular family activity over the school holidays.

Holiday season also brings a bigger demand to buy swimming kids armbands specially for children who cannot swim as well as searching for swimming lessons.

Naturally, over the summer months, swimming gets more popular and parents start noticing the importance of water safety for their kids more. Hence, parental pay more attention to how to make it possible for their kids to enjoy being in water.

Although RLSS UK advises people to swim at open water sites where there are lifeguards to help keep swimmers safe, sometimes help could be a long way away. There are nearly 400 drowning incidents in the U.K each year and 40 of those are children and young people.

Simply, not only drowning could be prevented when children know how to swim, but children can also enjoy being in and around water without making their parents nervous.

Swimming Armbands Cannot Replace Swimming Lessons For Your Child

One of the best ways to prevent drowning is to make sure you and your children learn to swim.

Swimming armbands cannot provide enough protection for several reasons:

  • Children swimming armbands, provide a false sense of security to children. They think they can float when they don’t. Learning to float is a skill that children learn in the early stages of learning to swim.
  • Inflatable armbands can puncture and lose air gradually when children swim with them. This could lead into difficulties that could be unsafe and distressing for children.
  • Children can take armbands off themselves when parents are not looking and try to jump in the water without them. When they don’t know how to swim, this could be really dangerous.Swimming underwater at Blue Wave Swim School

Learn To Swim To be A Competent Swimmer

First, based on Swim England recommendations, to be a competent swimmer, a swimmer needs to be able to swim at least 100 meters (without stopping) with ease and comfort, and tread the water for 30 seconds or float on the top of the water for at least 1 minute (without any floatation device).

Sounds easy???

Well, ……it is not!

In fact, according to a new survey done by the Red Cross in the U.S, 56% of adults who think they can swim, they don’t even have the necessary water safety skills to survive in water.
