Harvard Medical School recommends swimming as one of the top 5 exercises for adults. No wonder, more and more adults looking for swimming lessons.
However, one of the frequently typed question in Google: ‘Can I learn to swim at 40?’
1 in every 3 adults in England doesn’t know how to swim.
Most adult who seek swimming lessons more or less have similar backstories.
The majority of adult non-swimmers either had a below-standard swim teacher and unsympathetic instructor or had been discouraged from swimming by being taken to cold pools as children for school swimming.
Forming bad memories from swimming in childhood, would normally result in staying away from swimming for a lifetime.
But, you can change that! Here is how.
We have taught many adults who wanted to learn to swim from scratch for different reasons.
Check the list below and see if any of them would apply to you. If yes, we can help you with our 1:1 swim lessons.
If you are nervous about swimming or taking lessons, the below story is a real story. Peter was one of our adult learners who never learnt to swim as a child and finally he cracked it and overcome his fear of water.
Peter’s Backstory: Peter was a very healthy, active, and sporty guy when he joined in 2019. Peter was a complete beginner and had difficulty to be relaxed specially in the deep-end of the swimming pool, where he couldn’t touch the bottom of the pool.
Peter never learned to swim as a child and he had a traumatising experience with swimming. In one of the school swimming lessons, he was made to jump in the deep end of the pool even though he couldn’t swim. His swimming teacher had thought that was going to give him ‘confidence’, and he would eventually swim to save himself.
Needless to add, that experience put him off from swimming until he joined us in his 40’s.
Peter had 3 terms of 1:1 swimming lessons with us. Peter said:
‘At last, in my mid 40’s I decided to find time to learn how to swim. I could not be more happier with my choice of the school. Absolutely brilliant swimming school for all ages and abilities. Thanks to James, only after few 1-2-1 lessons I could see the progress and started to enjoy swimming. Despite his young age James is a born teacher. I’m loving every minute of the learning experience. ~ Peter Chopyk (January 2020)
Just be mindful that if you are O.K with swimming in the shallow end, but, get panic when water goes over your head, you still need to class yourself as a beginner. As learning how to be water-confident is the base of learning to swim.
You don’t let a lack of water confidence stop you from going for a swim. Just let us help you with swimming outside of your comfort zone.
You might be an O.K swimmer but can only swim with one stroke, for example, you can only do breaststroke with your head out of the water all the time. Or can swim front crawl but, side breathing is a challenge; as soon as you need to breathe, your stroke falls apart and you need to stop.
If you can swim, but, just about and not confidently, you are not alone.
Many adults in the U.K can only swim breaststroke. Want to learn a new stroke or improve your front crawl technique, hear it first-hand of how we helped Chris, who wanted to improve her front crawl technique and learn to do bilateral breathing correctly and efficiently.
‘I’m a confident adult swimmer who wanted to improve my stroke efficiency. Marjan has been superb at spotting exactly what needs to be done in order to improve. She’s a pleasure to be with and really knows her stuff. It’s clear that she’s not delivering just a one size fits all programme but really making the effort to respond individually. After only two lessons, i can already see improvement. Highly recommended.’
Swimming with the correct stroke technique is what you need to be able to lap swimming. Many adults have had swim lessons with us because they want to learn a specific stroke. For example they want to swim Front Crawl (with proper side breathing) or Breaststroke or Backstroke.
You can choose between one-to-one and semi-private lessons. The option of semi-private can be only offered if you would like to share your swim lessons with a friend or a family member.
