When Do Normally Summer Intensive Courses Run in London?
Summer intensive swimming courses typically run during the summer school holidays in London (England) based on the state school’s calendar. Summer holidays could vary slightly depending on where you live and normally depend on London borough you live or your child goes to school. You can check the state school’s calendar and holiday dates for your area here.
Here’s a general guide to when summer crash courses are usually available:
General Timing
Start and End Dates:
From the third week of July to the middle of August: Most intensive summer swimming courses begin in mid or by third week of July, right after the state school summer term ends, and run until August. Although different providers have different ways of offering crash course, the majority of swim school offer courses for 2- 4 weeks of summer holidays as most families will be away the second half of August until schools open again in September.
Duration:
5-Day courses run 4 weeks: Courses are often structured in one block of 5 days, with lessons held daily from Monday to Friday. Most intensive courses don’t run over the weekends as people prefer to enjoy weekends free of obligations to travel or rest.
Single-Week Crash Course: They are popular in school half-terms, but, many providers also offer summer courses only for one week or two.
Providers for Children Intensive Summer Holiday Swimming Courses
Start with Swim Schools Near You
Some swim schools offer intensive summer holiday courses but not all of them do. We have covered topic of finding a provider before in another blog.
If your child is already doing swimming lessons and you are happy with them, ask from your current provider if they have swim lessons running over the summer holidays. Some swim school like us, do offer summer holiday lessons and some don’t.
Contact your local leisure centres but, if you are looking for 1:1 intensive courses, most leisure centres do large group lessons.
Alternative Providers for Crash Course
If you’d prefer to go to another provider because for example, you wish to do an intensive course of 1:1 lessons , you can find others in your area by doing a Google search.
Try to put keywords like “summer intensive swim courses near me” and see what you can find online. For example, if you kike to do a course in Wimbledon or Southwest London, try to add these words in your searches.
Finding the Right Provider for Your Child:
Lesson formats:
Although most providers offer summer courses with the structure of weekly blocks of 5 lessons-per-week , the daily lessons could be group or private or semi-private lessons. At our swim school, we only provide private and semi-private lessons in our summer holiday courses. Our semi-private option is open to siblings of similar age and swimming ability and friends who wish to share lessons.
Choosing the right format of lessons for your child: If you’d prefer group lessons, more likely you find them in your local leisure centres. However, if you wish to maximize the time available for your child to engage in swimming without conflicting with other regular school schedule, 1:1 could be a great choice. If you live in southwest London, contact us for 1:1 summer intensive course in Wimbleon.
Swimming Pool Specifications
Depending on the provider, again, the type of swimming pool that each provider uses is different. It could be a small teaching pool which could be fine for pre-school children and beginners but, at our swim school, we offer our intensive summer courses in a 25 meter pool in Wimbledon, so, we can teach all levels of swimming; from complete beginners to advanced level. Choose the one that could be right for your child’s age and swimming ability.
Conclusion
Summer intensive swimming courses generally run from late July to mid-August. Most crash courses are structured in weekly blocks of 5-Day courses. If you live in southwest London, check with specific providers like us, to find the more details. Ensure you can plan the most convenient and effective schedule for your child.

My girls have been going to Blue Wave Swim School for over 2 years, they have been looking forward to each lesson and keep practicing the swimming tricks even in a bath. All teachers and an owner of the school has been friendly, very professional. They found unique approach and made kids happy, but most importantly show them how to swim and have fun. Thank you very much from our family to Blue Wave Swim School.
Easter 2021 Crash Course Various lockdowns have held back my daughter’s swimming development so we opted for a crash 4 day course over Easter and she has come away from it much more confident and with a recognisable stroke as opposed to doggy paddle!
Although I have only attended two lessons, Marjan’s bubbly personality makes you feel instantly at ease. During the lessons, the pool was not very busy which is a good thing (as opposed to public pools) for those who are anxious. I would strongly recommend to adults who have experienced trauma with water at a certain time in their lives.
My son has been going to swimming lessons at Blue Wave in Wimbledon for a few years now and thoroughly enjoys it. The teaching is great and the lessons well run. Helps to prepare him for when we finally get to go on holiday again!
My son went to improve his swimming technique and found his instructor very helpful, very kind and patient. The school itself is very welcoming and feels safe for all the children who go there. I would highly recommend it.
My son is 4 years-old and we were looking for weekend swimming classes in a nice environment that could bring good results. After some research we chose Blue Wave Swim. Our son has been having private lessons since the end of 2018 and he is progressing very well. We believe the professionalism of the team, the clean and tidy infrastructure, and the good care of the management are contributing for his development and confidence in the water. Thank you very much Blue Wave Swim!
I am grateful to Marjan and her team at Blue Wave Swim for their hard work and for promoting happiness and enjoyment in swimming. It is amazing to watch the lessons, see the attention, the encouragement and the support the children receive. I have been impressed with my daughters’ progress and the fact that they love attending their classes and learning a vital life skill. Thank you very much. Great job!
My daughter, who is now 7 years old, started with blue wave two years back and we have been very happy with her progress at the school. Initially we started with group lessons but once she got comfortable in water we moved her to semi private lessons, which made a lot of difference in her ability to learn swimming. As part of the smaller group she is better bonded with other children in the group and gets more attention from the swimming instructor, which is helping her advance her swimming skills. During her 2 years with blue wave, swimming instructors for my daughter have changed and while continuity in learning was maintained, I think this could have been managed better. Needless to say, she still goes and enjoys her time here and looks forward to her class every week. Overall we are very pleased with Blue Wave and would recommend them without any hesitation.
Highly recommend this swimming school. My daughter has been attending since she was 1 years old and she loves it. The teachers are very good with children and my daughter, who is now 4 years old is very confident in the water.
